Position Summary Information

Duties

JOB SUMMARY: The Electronic Access Librarian manages the electronic services of the library. This includes developing, maintaining, and coordinating electronic services with librarians and departments outside the library. This position also provides library and research instruction and reference assistance for online and face-to-face classes consisting of traditional and non-traditional students. The university offers a for-credit library instruction course specific to each College. This position serves as the library liaison with off-campus sites of the University, and assists the Library Director in developing and coordinating Athens State Library services at those sites. This is a twelve-month tenure-track position with faculty rank. The position reports to the Library Director.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Coordinate development of the library’s web presence, working collegially with others to create, assess, revise, and maintain web content, navigation, access to resources and social media.
• Collaborate with the Information Technology Department to ensure proper equipment, software, and hardware needs for the library.
• Perform local administration functions for electronic resources, including coordinating connection to and configuration of vendors’ interfaces, technology support, and usage statistics.
• Work with the Acquisitions Librarian and vendors of electronic resources regarding trials, contracts, and licensing and e-journal interfaces including managing user authentication, including global and individual ids and passwords
• Provide reference services through various communication methods to on-campus and off-campus students and faculty and keep accurate counts.
• Actively solicit, create and teach library instruction to support the university’s curriculum and students in both traditional and online formats. Athens State has one credit library courses, embedded librarians, and bibliographic instruction.
• Work with assigned departments and co-workers to enhance the library’s collections and act as a point of contact for assigned departments.
• Work within teams and departments to recommend and assess new programs, policies, procedures and services for public services.
• Actively develop and implement ideas for the promotion of the library to the university community including but not limited to programs, activities, and services.
• Positively represent Athens State University in professional, community, and state organizations.
• Actively participate in professional development and continuing education.
• Assist in covering service points as needed.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
• Master’s degree in Library Science or recognized equivalent from an ALA-accredited program.
• At least two years of experience with reference and/or library instruction in an academic library.
• Experience providing library services in a distance education environment.
• Demonstrated knowledge of library electronic resources.
• Demonstrated ability to design, build, and access effective services and a web presence that is user and instruction oriented.
• Strong service orientation as demonstrated by an ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, students, and library personnel at all levels.
• Demonstrate strong organizational, planning, interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
• Ability to adapt quickly to new technologies and implement those deemed appropriate for the community.

Salary Schedule

$37,000-47,500, minimum to midpoint. Salary will be competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience. Position includes faculty rank and full benefits package.

Athens State University, with a student population of approximately 3500, is located near the northern border of Alabama. It is a short driving distance to Huntsville (pop. 183,000), a high growth, and urban center. It is also within a 90-minute drive via Interstate 65 to either Nashville or Birmingham. Two full service state parks adjacent to the Tennessee River are less than one hour from campus. Athens State is the oldest institution of higher learning in Alabama with origins as a private institution dating from the 1820s. Since 1975, it has been part of the state system of higher education. Athens is conveniently located 100 miles north of Birmingham and 100 miles south of Nashville on the Alabama/Tennessee border, a mere 250 miles from Atlanta, and within 25 miles of the Huntsville International Airport.
