Position Summary Information

Duties

The Archivist is responsible for preservation and conservation of collections and records relating to the history of Athens State University. The majority of these items are unique to this institution. Duties include organizing, preserving, developing, and digitizing University historical material; developing finding aids; supervising student workers and volunteers; showcasing special collections; identifying and cultivating potential donors to the Archives; and serving as liaison between the University Archives and the community. This is a twelve-month tenure-track position with faculty rank of Assistant Librarian. The position reports to the Library Director.
• Develop and oversee archival collections.
• Create and evaluate archival policies and procedures.
• Provide reference and research services to Archives users.
• Create and produce archival brochures, guides, subject indexes, and other tools to enhance access to collections.
• Develop and update Archives web page.
• Oversee the digitization and cataloging of material significant to Athens State University history.
• Direct special Archives projects such as developing repositories of oral histories, faculty publications, and other special collections related to Athens State University.
• Manage the Archives budget.
• Solicit and receive donations to the Archives.
• Investigate, plan, and coordinate the technology required to facilitate the efficient retrieval of and access to archival information.
• Plan and create historical displays for showcases and University special events.
• Supervise student works, volunteers, and student interns.
• Conduct historical tours for students and researchers.
• Provide historical presentations for students, employees, and community groups.
• Serve on the Athens State University Heritage Committee.
• Represent Athens State on statewide archival-related committees.
• Provide the Library Director with data and other reports pertinent to Archives operations.

Qualifications

ALA- accredited MLS/MLIS (Master of Library and Information Science,) or Master’s degree in archival studies.
• At least three years of work experience in the field of archives and/or archival preservation.
• Two years of work experience in an academic library.
• Experience with electronic records management and digital preservation issues. Knowledge of descriptive metadata standards including MARC, DACS, Dublin Core and of data structure standards relevant to archival control of digital collection material including EAD.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS AND JOB REQUIREMENTS:
• Knowledge of archival administrative procedures, including preservation and conservation techniques established by the Alabama Department of Archives and History.
• Extensive knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, including Access and Excel database packages.
• Ability to establish effective working relationships with students, faculty, and the public.
• Ability to serve as a representative of the University during guided tours and public presentations.
• Ability to work independently, or with minimal supervision.
• Ability to analyze job tasks, offer solutions, and work with others toward implementation.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule including occasional evening and weekend hours.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Salary Schedule

$38,000-45,527, minimum to midpoint, commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Located in historic Athens, Alabama, Athens State University offers junior and senior-level coursework to community college graduates and transfer students holding sufficient credits from other institutions. Presently, over 3,100 students have selected Athens State because of its neighborly environment where 50 majors and degree programs are offered, with courses taught by a supportive and exceptional faculty. Approximately 80% of the students are enrolled in at least one online course. The typical student is a working adult who commutes. Recently, the University was featured in the 2015 Best Value Online College Rankings by OnlineU.org for four online programs including computer science, accounting, education and human resources. The University offers undergraduate degree programs in Liberal Arts, Teacher Preparation, and Business. The University employs more than 350 full and part-time employees with approximately 90 full-time faculty members in three colleges: College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business, and College of Education. Seventy-five percent of the full-time faculty members hold a terminal degree. The University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

Athens, Alabama is located in north Alabama equidistant between Nashville, TN and Birmingham, AL.
